The One Best Weight Loss Plan

by Annie on October 27, 2011

Who among us doesn’t need to lose weight?  As we hit forty years of age, or thereabouts, and onward, the body’s metabolism rate generally begins to slow down.  Even people who have never struggled with excess weight begin to notice that their jeans are feeling a little too tight.  Those who have had to fight weight gain all their lives are having an even harder time losing or just maintaining their weight.

I am no expert on weight loss.  I also am not trying to promote a particular diet, or program, or new pill.

I’ve always heard that the secret to weight control consists of one simple strategy:  eat less, move more.

Eat less.  Easy to say, easy to do.  I suggest that when you eat, whatever you eat, whenever you eat, whether a meal or a snack, simply eat less of it.

Eating supper?  Take one spoonful less of everything.  Sandwich?  Have a half instead of a whole.  Candy bar?  Eat half and save the rest for tomorrow.  Or share with a friend.

It is doable.  It is free.  It doesn’t require that you buy certain foods that you’ve never liked or never eaten before.

Just eat less.

The other half of that equation is to move more.  Leave that closest parking spot for someone in worse shape than you.  Park a little further away from your work place, the drug store, where ever you’re going today.  When at home, take the long way from the kitchen to the table.  Walk around the table a couple of times, into the living room, up the stairs, and then back to the table.

I know it sounds silly.  But you’re building a habit that will last a lifetime.  Eat less, move more.

You can do this.  I can do this.  I resolve to add a few more steps to my day today, and to take a few less bites.

Fitness over forty–it’s not easy, but it’s not that hard either.  We can do this!

Two Minute Fitness For Anyone, Anywhere

by Annie on October 24, 2011

As with most things, yoga can be practiced in a variety of ways.  You don’t have to do it ‘exactly right’ or not at all.  You don’t have to completely change your life or your diet or your religion to use certain yoga techniques and positions to improve your body’s muscle tone, your breathing and lung capacity, and your overall level of fitness.

Many yoga positions are very simple.  You can practice them almost anywhere.  Let’s look at a couple that you can easily incorporate into your daily life, even at work.

If you can breathe, you can do this.  Got two minutes to spare?  You can do this.

Take a slow deep breath in.  Count to three and slowly breathe out.  As you fill your lungs with oxygen, focus on your neck and shoulders. Feel them relax and the tension flow out.  Repeat this for about two or three minutes.  You will be surprised how much this basic yoga can calm and at the same time invigorate your body.

Another easy yoga move you can do sitting or standing, in just a couple of minutes, will drain tension and stiffness from your neck.

1.  Let your head slowly fall forward as if bowing your head.

2.  Slowly bring your head back to center, the original position.

3.  Slowly tip your head to the left, then bring back to original position.

4.  Repeat the above to the right.

5.  Lean your head back as if you are looking straight up.

6.  Slowly bring your head back to original position.

Repeat this sequence two or three times.  Always move slowly and deliberately.  Yoga is not intended to be done fast.  Visualize your entire body becoming stronger and stress flowing out of your body.

As you get into the habit of doing both these simple yoga moves a few times a day you will be in that minority of people who are actually doing something to increase their fitness level.

Give yourself a pat on the back.  Good for you!

But I Don’t WANT To Work Out!

by Annie on October 20, 2011

Sound familiar?  If you are like me, and gazillions of other people, you don’t want to work out.  You don’t want to walk on the treadmill, you don’t want to lift weights, do yoga, jog, swim, work on your core, or do stretching exercises.

You just flat don’t want to.

And because it isn’t something you want to do, you never seem to find time to do it.  Oh, you know you need to.  You know you should, and that you’ll ‘be glad you did’ later, and that you’ll feel better about yourself if you do work out.

But there’s never a good time.

Too much to do before leaving for work; too tired after work, and still too much to do.  Evenings, well, evenings are for relaxing in front of the TV, or with a book, because you worked hard all day long, taking NO time for yourself all day long.  You deserve to have just an hour or two to do what you want to do.

Sound at all familiar?

I write this from personal first-hand knowledge.  All the above statements are my own reasons for not working out.  And I don’t work out, 99% of the time.  I am blessed with good health (for now) and a decent level of energy (for now) and an acceptable level of fitness, in that I can go to the grocery store and make my rounds without the use of a motorized chair.

But, I want more.

I want more strength, more endurance, more energy, and more pride in what I’m doing.

I want to make the most of God-given health and I want it to last.

I work as an R.N. in a small rural hospital.  I see people in their 70′s and 80′s who are an inspiration to me in how I DON’T want to be when I’m that age.

I also see the rare person in her 90′s who is a wonderful reminder of what I want for myself.

I will find the time, I will MAKE the time to be a good steward of my body and my health.

Do I want to walk on the treadmill?  No.  There’s a dozen things I need to do right now, and a hundred things I’d rather do.

But, I’m going to.  Right now.

One step at a time, to that fitness I’m wanting.  Join me, let’s you and I set the stage to be, in 30-plus years, those people in their 90′s who are vibrant, energetic, happy, and living to the max.

You can do this.  I can do this.  Fitness over forty is not just a phrase, it’s a way of life.  Just do it!

Still More Tips To Beat Depression…

January 23, 2009

I once heard depression described as “anger turned inward.”  It makes sense if you think about it.  Many of us have anger inside that we don’t know what to do with.  Sometimes it’s anger at a specific person.  Sometimes, it’s anger at a situation, something we feel is beyond any control of ours.   With no [...]

More Tips For Beating Depression….

January 21, 2009

I’m not going to fib to you.  It is neither easy nor quick to get over depression.  Most things though, that are worth doing and are necessary for our good health, are worth the effort. I talked some previously about how walking helped me when I had a bout of depression.  Simple, short, easy walks; [...]

Emotional Fitness

December 27, 2008

Our emotional health is every bit as important and vital to our overall well-being as our physical fitness.  A healthy fit body is possible without emotional soundness, but a person who is physically fit and emotionally empty is still living only half a life.  One without the other is like turkey and dressing:  you can [...]

You Are What You Eat…..

December 26, 2008

We’ve all heard it said.  You are what you eat.  Most of us have heard it so often, and for all of our lives, and don’t really think about the truth in this simple statement. Our bodies require fuel, just as any car or truck does.  Without fuel, a car just won’t run.  With poor [...]

Where Do I Start?

December 25, 2008

Do you have to jog to be fit? NO! Jogging is neither necessary, nor even the best form of exercise for many of us.  For many, jogging causes, over time, harmful stress on our knee joints, feet, ankles, and hips.  Many people jog without any problem, and I would never discourage them from doing so.  [...]
