None of us can stop the passage of time, and the aging of our bodies. But we can drastically slow the effects that the passage of time has on our bodies. Most of us want to live for as long as we can, and in the best health possible. A strong, agile, and fit body, an inquisitive mind, and a happy heart can give you the advantage in your later years.
Here, at Fitness Over 40, we’re going to explore together all the simple and easy things we can do, right now, beginning today, to get that level of health and fitness that will be our foundation as we travel on down that path called Life.
Walking for exercise is one of the best things you can do for yourself. All you need for a walking program is a pair of good shoes. It’s important that you splurge on yourself, and get good high quality shoes, because cheap shoes of inferior quality can cause you more problems on down the road. Feet, knee, hip, and back problems can all be traced back to bad or non-existent support for your feet. I strongly recommend that you find a shoe store that specializes in shoes for runners. Runners are committed to their health and to running, and they know they cannot run if their poor choice of footwear causes joint problems. You can be sure of finding a good quality pair of walking shoes in one of these types of stores.
Tell the salesperson that you are starting a walking program and are looking for a good pair of shoes. Don’t feel intimidated that you are not a runner; walking is a very respectable form of exercise. What the salesperson really wants is to find a pair of shoes that will work for you, and gain you as a regular customer.
I do not give medical advice here, and nothing written here should be placed over your own doctor’s advice. The safest and wisest thing to do is to have a checkup with your physician before starting a new exercise program. Assuming that you have done that, always start slow with any new exercise and fitness program. Make a commitment to yourself to walk for 10-15 minutes, three or four times a week. That’s all.
So, find yourself a good shoe store, and go shopping!
